“Secretary” was the indie film that really got Maggie Gyllenhaal noticed by mainstream Hollywood, despite her various film roles before that. And why shouldn’t she be recognized, considering how she completely bared her body and had many simulated sex and bondage scenes with her co-star James Spader? Spader’s an old hat at playing perverts in sexually-themed movies, like his critically-acclaimed, Cannes award-winning portrayal in “sex, lies and videotape”, but this was Maggie Gyllenhaal’s first time to do full-frontal nudity, and we’re glad she did it!
She should be glad too, because this black comedy won all sorts of awards, mostly for the script and her performance. A Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy isn’t something to sneeze at, and she won the National Board of Review’s Best Breakthrough Actress award, as well as the Online Film Critics’ Best Breakthrough Performance award for this role. But awards aside, what we love about this film is all the BDSM action and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s nude body participating in those bondage sessions!
